Chapter 1920: Friendly Reminder
Chapter 1920: Friendly Reminder
"I thought it’d take a moment to arrive in the realm. Why does it take so long?"
Rex looked to the passing kaleidoscope of rainbow colour right outside the window, confused as to why they hadn’t arrived yet, even though it had been more than a minute. Since the realm they were heading to was tied to the Gamma Cluster belonging to High Lord Rashal, he expected to arrive quickly.
Like going through some sort of special highway.
After all, if the Pale Defenders and Vadyn have the Primordial Authority Permit, people from High Lord Rashal should have an even better version, allowing them free passage throughout the Gamma Cluster or even the entire Primordial Meadow.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case.
"It doesn’t work like that," Liebert looked at Rex from the rearview mirror. "The Overseer controls all the realms and the roads leading to all of them, so there are always conflicts. In order to mitigate a large conflict, those who travel using his Permit would have a buffer time.
"Not directly tied to the distance to the designated realm, but more tied to the strength of the designated realm." He added.
Rex made the shape of the letter O with his lips and nodded his head.
It’s somewhat logical.
Since the Overseer controls all the roads leading to all realms, he must always be involved in any conflict between Demigods or even Gods. Having a battle between Gods must be catastrophic, so there must be preventive actions in place.
One being this buffering time, so that the Overseer could check on who was travelling and to where.
Rex doubted the Overseer had full control over who could pass, so there must be some sort of faction that would dictate important matters; the Overseer is only the owner of the roads, making him the direct extension of this faction’s reach.
And it also made sense for the buffering time to depend on the destination, not the distance.
Going to a high-conflict area would need a more thorough check.
It feels similar to some sectors of Ratmawati City that have problems with their borders, which made it a requirement for thorough checking. "Since we’re not going to a high-conflict realm—it will not take too long, right?"
"Not a high-conflict realm, but still a military realm," Liebert corrected. "It will take a few hours. And when we regrouped with the Red Skull Elite Force and went to the Grey Realm, it would be shorter as it’s High Lord Rasha’s realm, and we’re his representatives."
An hour passed.
Rex spent his time using the Pure God Sense skill, slipping in training here and there.
Observing the scenery outside for too long made him dizzy.
He opened his eyes when Davina tapped his hand and noticed her signaling for something.
For a private talk.
Rex used the Law of Misdirection, separating the front part of the car—and the longer back part of the car, blotting out any sound to reach Liebert. "What?" He asked and raised a brow. "I really want to keep training right now."
He still couldn’t accept that he’d meet the Red Skull Elite Force without good preparations.
Meeting them without being able to sense immortal energy.
"Just a minute," Davina exuded a sparkling silver aura from her shoulders. "Care to explain this?"
Lilliana also did the same thing, "I also got it. A few days ago, I suddenly learned about these abilities."
Inspecting the aura, Rex realized that it was the Almighty Aura skill.
One that both of them also inherited because of the sudden quest.
Both of them should gain the Almighty Aura skill—and also the Memory Spirit skill, which both came from the Godlings he killed on the vault grounds. Since the sisters helped him through Bellana, that was also acknowledged by the System as a contribution from them.
"Abilities I learned recently."
"And what does it have to do with us?"
"It’s a special case. During that specific day, any ability I learned would also be bestowed upon you two."
Of course, Rex didn’t tell them about the System.
Not because he doesn’t want to, but because it would only lead to more questions.
Questions that he couldn’t answer when they were in public, like this, with a spy sitting on the front seat.
But then again, the System is unpredictable, so telling people about it isn’t something he wanted to do.
"I’ve never heard of something like that," Davina’s brows furrowed. She has read about the werewolves in the Mortal Realm, and she was quite sure they didn’t have anything like this. Heck, even those high and mighty Sky People wouldn’t have powers like this. "Isn’t that kind of a cheat?"
"Not really," Rex shrugged and pointed at himself. "Considering I need to get it with my own hands."
"So exciting," Lilliana covered her mouth and laughed, still elegant despite her humorous laughter. "I made the right decision sticking around. Who knows? Maybe if I... suck up to you more, I’d be able to even surpass this little sister of mine."
"That’s more fantasy than a fantasy book, expired sister," Davina sneered and crossed her arms.
Before they could quarrel again, Rex intervened.
"Say, do the two of you have something to survive? Like some sort of life-saving artifacts?"
"Of course," Lilliana hooked her necklace with her thumb. "It’s this."
"I can never go out—without having one," Davina also nodded, remembering how strict Duike Lorcan was about her; the only good offspring he has. "It’s attached to my soul, so it’s going to be fine. I’ll also keep an eye on Lilliana later."
Despite their quarrels, they were still sisters.
Both of them would cover each other to the death, Rex could see it in their eyes, and that’s reassuring.
A moment later, Rex’s eyes caught sight of a notification from the System.
Glass World...? I saw that somewhere.
Rex thought for a second and remembered that it was the oustification that belonged to Vadyn.
She was contacting him.
’Sir Rex, can you hear me?’
Loud and clear. To what do I owe this?
’Just a friendly warning, from a friendly person. I don’t know what Rashal is planning, but that place— the Grey Realm... Something dangerous is in there. It’s a person. I’m quite sure about it, but the origin of this person is unknown. That’s the only fact about this case.’
Is he planning to kill me by sending me on a suicide mission?
’If he wanted you dead, then you’d be dead. This is not it. Just don’t let your guard down, and if you’re willing, keep the Red Skull Elite Force safe. They are good people.’
Rex remained silent for a moment deliberately.
Pondering about what to make about what she said.
And why are you telling me this?
’Because I see the same blood in your eyes as the blood in Rashal’s eyes.’
I see.
’If it makes it any better, the attempt on Pale Defender Zev, it wasn’t done by Rashal’s orders. His order to Liebert was to make sure you keep your promise. That you don’t bring harm to this realm, that pitiful attempt was entirely Liebert. He wanted to score points for Rashal.
’Rashal has a big ego, but his pettiness is selective. He won’t be offended by someone like you.’
Rex wasn’t offended by her words.
Considering the discrepancy between their positions, it was natural for High Lord Rashal to have some glimpse of superiority over Rex. He is one of the High Lords of a hive city under arguably one of the most prominent Gods in the God Realm.
It would be odd for him to be offended by the antics Rex did to gain a sliver of leverage.
For Rex, this is for survival.
But for High Lord Rashal, this was simply another day.
Rex could tell from the High Lord’s bearing that he understood exactly why he had acted as he did; the man would have done the same if their positions were reversed. And yet—Rex found it strange that the High Lord would go so far to humiliate him, simply to even the score by targeting Zev.
It was too petty for a tyrant.
And he was disappointed as he quite respected the High Lord.
As it turns out, the pettiness came from Liebert, who wanted to impress the High Lord.
Now, everything made sense.
’Will you protect the Red Skull Elite Force?’
Depends.
’Depends on what? If you’re asking me to be the guarantee for whatever you have going on with Rashal, then I’m sorry to disappoint you—but it’s not going to work. You saw him in person. He’s not the type to listen to anyone.’
Oh, I beg to differ. The bond of a family is stronger than you gave credit for.
’No, I won’t do it. Believe me when I say impossible.’
At least think about it before declining.
’Fine, I’ll think about it. Now, you have to protect the Red Skull Elite Force.’
Yes, yes. As long as you also tell me what you see.
Rex’s head recoiled when the sensation wrapping around his mind disappeared—as Vadyn severed their telepathic connection one-sidedly. He smirked a little at the situation. Just earlier, he had been fretting over how to make sure the High Lord would keep his word.
Now, he has the ticket to that.
It’s not a guarantee, but it’s better than nothing.
She shares blood with the High Lord, alright. How cute.
Even through the telepathy, Rex could hear it clearly in her voice—she was worried about the Red Skull Elite Force. As High Lord Rashal’s personal army, these were not mere soldiers; they were assets of significant importance.
If Rex had to guess, they might also serve as the backbone of High Lord Rashal’s political power.
People he sent to deal with pressing matters.
He wasn’t that surprised when he knew what Vadyn wanted from him.
If the Red Skull Elite Force was thinned down, then that’ll impact High Lord Rashal’s authority.
High Lord Rashal wouldn’t lower himself to ask Rex to do this, but she can.
And somehow, that made those two a perfect team.
A dynamic that reminded him of Evelyn.
"Care to share what’s funny to make you smile like that?" Davina asked without looking.
"Prepare yourself for a really, really bad fight," Rex looked out the window; his lips kept curling as if the thought of fighting a brutal battle only served to excite him rather than scare him. "Unless my guts are really off, we’re going to run into something wild in the Grey Realm."
Eventually, the scenery outside distorted and rippled.
The car bursts into the destination; the tires screech until it comes to an abrupt stop.
"We’ve arrived."
Liebert walked out of the front seat.
Rex and the sisters followed, closing the car door behind them while looking around curiously.
Considering that they were going to meet with an elite force, they were expecting to be dropped in a military sector. A place filled with barracks and weaponsmiths. But they were now in a hilly plain with one paved road of dirt that kept going into the horizon.
In the distance, Rex’s eyes saw a sword stabbing into the ground like some sort of marking.
"Where’s the Red Skull Elite Force?" Davina asked in confusion, gesturing around the empty place.
Liebert didn’t answer.
Just then, the wind shifted, and the three of them tilted their heads upward.
A figure came down from the sky, cutting through the morning cloud, and landed hard against the plain.
He landed a few steps away from Rex, really close, but Rex didn’t even bother moving.
Instead, he looked at the figure with mild curiosity, wanting to know what this was all about.
"You’re the new guy the High Lord sent to parasite us," the figure slowly rose; his body was massive, even taller than Rex, which was surprising. He boasted his massive frame and looked down at Rex. "Rex, am I right...?"
